ChuckBaggett1488303079
My old computer that I'm stuck with for the time being doesn't do SSE2 instructions.Any chance that any V2 based viewer, from Ll or 3rd party, will ever work on this old machine? Rolig Loon
Nope. Virtually all computers sold after about 2004 have chips that use SSE2, and a vanishingly small fraction of SL's resident community have computers that old. When LL made SSE2 compatability a requirement a couple of months ago, it hardly created a ripple of complaint, so I think they are pretty confident that they made the right move. Sephy McCaw
nope.. no chance at all.... i dont even think the very first viewers came without such instructions.... you could possibly try a text based viewer, but i wouldnt hold my breath if i was you. Void Singer
maybe not a V2 version, but possibly a V1 version with V2 features... Phoenix is still viable in the short term (default version is non-SSE2), and I believe neither Cool, nor Singularity require it, but both are actively developed still and have most if not all current V2 features, and are both working on mesh support. Sephy McCaw
I have to just say this that hes talking about SSE.. not SSE2....yes there is non SSE2 viewers out there but there isnt and non SSE viewers from what i can tell... not even pre alpha viewers were non SSE
Void Singer
I presumed it to be a typo since OP's only worried about the V2 change (meaning V1 probably does work)

Rolig Loon
"Virtually" as in "a large majority". Borrowing here from Wikipedia: "SSE2, Streaming SIMD Extensions 2, is one of the Intel SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) processor supplementary instruction sets first introduced by Intel with the initial version of the Pentium 4 in 2001. It extends the earlier SSE instruction set, and is intended to fully supplant MMX. [...... ]Rival chip-maker AMD added support for SSE2 with the introduction of their Opteron and Athlon 64 ranges of AMD6464-bit CPUs in 2003. [.......] SSE2 and the other SIMD instruction sets were intended primarily to improve CPU support for realtime graphics, notably gaming. A CPU that is not marketed for this purpose or that has an alternative SIMD instruction set has no need for SSE2. The following CPUs implemented IA-32 after SSE2 was developed, but did not implement SSE2: AMD CPUs prior to Athlon 64, including all Socket A-based CPUs Intel CPUs prior to Pentium 4 VIA C3 Transmeta Crusoe" In other words, there aren't a lot of non-SSE2 computers out there that have been built since about 2003. Merisana
Non SSE2 voewer i know is Singularity 1.5.4 Setup (Windows, Athlon XP SSE special) that you can find at the Singularity Viewer download page. It is the 7th starting from the bottom of the page. Very laggy. It is kinda late but hope it will help someone having the same problem... I encountered at least one so far.
