Second Life Mobile Beta? Fake or Real?

I've just spoken with Linden Lab and this is real. Not a fake.

Like others on here I too doubted this but I checked directly with LL.

 

Linden Lab also suggest that anyone who has doubts about this should contact them directly and do what I did. Supply the email information for them to check on so they can confirm that the email information is genuine, or not.

I did this and LL informed me that they are hosting the Beta Test through onlive.com

They also suggest that you get your information DIRECTLY from them and not any other source, to ensure that any emails sent are genuine.

It may be legitimate but this is a TERRIBLE way to go about getting participants.

Spoofed E-Mails with Spoofed Links to Spoofed Web Sites are simply too ubiquitous and one that takes you to a Third Party Provider really pushes it.

This program should have been officially stated in an official place (e.g., this websites Blog).

You are per the TOS responsible for any and all actions taken in your account. 

An E Mail request soliciting participation from a third party provider is not smart.

I agree. I also suggested that someone from LL should address this by posting a response to peoples concerns about possible phishing/hacking of accounts via emails that appear to be sent from them on the forums as well as reply to people about this Beta participation offer and also to actually post the Beta participation programme themselves.

 

Also these are not spoofed emails to spoof websites.I can only comment on the email sent to me, and all the links in the one I had were genuine, as was the email I received, I've had others from LL about surveys and also requests for "assistance" with items etc within SL, some I've responded to and others I haven't. Commitment to RL only allows me a certain amount of time in here lately, whereas a few months ago I was in here most days. Hence my participation with certain things within SL.

 

I also did an IP Address check on the IP in the email as I hadn't heard anything about a Beta Test for mobile devices, and it (the IP Address) is genuine.

I stress again, I'm only referring to the email I received and as far as I'm aware this is the same email sent to others.

 

The online questionairre, and the 5 questions are soley to do with the Beta Testing. They want to know what you will be using to test it on. Desktop PC, Tablet, mobile, Mac etc. Also what O/S you will be using etc. Also they need to know your location.. ie where in the World you are. These details are what you'd fill out when joining most sites nowadays anyway. Opt in/out for info etc is also available when you fill out details.

All they want you to do, if selected, is to test it - The programme - and give feedback and report any bugs etc and also to keep "silent" about the testing etc. Again something that Beta testing entails when trialling a new product.

 

Hardly spoofing or scamming in my eyes. This service [Onlive.com]  is akin to Steam and Origin etc. They too both do Beta Tests of games etc. No doubt you have to go through a similar process if you want to do testing with them.

I'm not condoning their actions or other peoples for that matter but, as others have said, do wish that LL would inform people about this and respond to comments in the forums and post a blog etc about this.

One thing that does concern me here as a potential issue is that the OnLive TOS is at odds with the LL TOS, especially in the adult area.  Here's the section of the TOS from OnLive's website:-

"Everyone wants to enjoy his or her time on the Service. Each user must
ensure that his or her User Generated Content does not detract from any
other user’s experience using the Service. In particular, creating,
posting or linking to any of the following is prohibited (“Prohibited
Content”), subject to OnLive’s sole discretion:
  - content that is defamatory, libelous, slanderous, discriminatory,
obscene, vulgar, pornographic, sexually explicit, harmful, invasive of a
person or entity’s privacy or publicity rights, abusive, inflammatory,
in violation of any applicable law or otherwise objectionable or
insulting;"

So for some that would rule out the use of the LL "mobile" solution if they have to sign up to OnLive and accept the OnLive TOS before being able to access SL via that method, which is more liberal.

While this is a solution, it's not a well contained solution as is a bit of a cheat as I suggested in another post.

I understand that this was/is not a spoofed E Mail.

It's that good surfing habits say "don't follow links in E Mails," especially things that involve passwords, etc.

LL did the wrong thing by not posting an official notice.

(Some) people responded correctly, contacting LL about it.

Me, I would have forwarded it to security@secondlife.com.  I do the same with any suspicious looking E Mail that I get that purports to be from my bank or PayPal or what have you.  It only takes a few seconds of my time.  My spam filters do a good job of keeping that junk out so I don't see very many any more.

I just got an email from the exact same address telling me that "some Residents outside the United States with a Credit Card on file may have difficulty with their current payment method" and "your account has been identified as one that may be affected".

The next line was trying to get me to click on a fake link and re-enter my credit card information.

I'm not outside the US, and I use Pay Pal, so LL doesn't know or care about my credit card information. I highly suspect anything from that email address is fake.

It seems quite likey that the issue with the credit cards only applies to non-US users, but the mail has been broadly sent to a much wider audience for whatever reasons.

The email came from em.secondlife.com. The domain secondlife.com is owned by Linden Lab. It's legitimate. The "em" part is the server; it's highly likely em stands for email. If you look at the URL for these forums, you'll note the address starts with community.secondlife.com - same domain.

The link is also valid, but I don't use links in emails no matter who they come from. It's always safer to go directly to the website yourself.

Yep, joys of necrobumping.

For the few topics in this thread:

1) There likely wont be an SL mobile viewer unless mobile devices start to increase in performance.

SL is fine on a modern ULV i-series processor and some high end AMD APU's (Bristol Ridge coming out soon should outperform Intel Iris Pro), but mobile devices other than high end tablets really dont have those components. Most Windows 10 tablets and sorts use Atoms or Celerons due to the low wattage compared to 15-35w for i series stuff, and those arent capable of SL on their own. But things like the Apple A processors or the ARM stuff in most android tablets wont be able to play SL. Especially not any cell phones currently.

2) Anything thats telling you to enter your card information, just dont.

Contact your bank if you are concerned about your account information having been stolen, with recent stuff like the Equifax Breach.
