A few months ago I bought land for the first time and set up a forest. Originally the terrain was grassy, now it has become sandy. Does terrian normally change like this, or is there a way to change it?

I saw a problem like this on mainland parcels about a month ago. The sim grass appeared to change to a sand texture. However, when I set my graphics setting down, the texture went back to grass. I was also seeing water looking kinda dull and lifeless. It started with a viewer update. I downgraded my viewer and things looked normal again. When I went back to a newer viewer, the problem returned. So I decided to updated my graphics drivers and that fixed the problem.
So you might give that a try.

The viewer change may be a red herring. A new terrain appearance is generated randomly with each login. There's a jira to change that. (Note that this randomization means that different people will see different terrain textures on the same sim at the same time.)

What Qie said.
Also, changing the height of land around a parcel changes which texture is seen on the parcel. So someone on the next parcel can do things to the land that affects the texture on your parcel.
The way that ground textures were done (as mentioned be Qie) is ridiculous. I hate it, and I've been unable to come up with any reason at all why it was designed to be random.
