As a resident who has spent the past seven and a half years working on continuous fundraising schemes to keep our group's sim paid for, I sympathize.  I can think of a lot of organizations that would welcome free land.  In fact, non-profits (educational organizations, museums, the Cancer Society, whatever ... ) do get a discount on land, so that helps.  It's also a sore point with a lot of educators because Linden Lab eliminated the discount for several years, after encouraging colleges to set up shop here, but that's a different story.

In any case, once Linden Lab started down that road very far, they'd get bogged down trying to figure out who should get free land, making value judgments about whether virtual soccer is more worthy than virtual skydiving or virtual dragon riding.  I wouldn't want to have that responsibility, and I don't see Linden Lab leaping to do it either.
