Why might I be hearing a particular sound several hundred meters away?

That's such a long distance that one wonders if it could be a Shared Media source, rather than spatial sounds.

Over shorter distances, there are the usual effects of volume (louder sounds heard from farther away), object size (bigger things stay in interest list at a greater distance), and any scripted limits if llTriggerSoundLimited() is used. But this report seems outside the range of any of those.

My guess is that the sound is simply being played simlutaneously from several prims in the ship. A simple sound can be triggered in several places at once if you send either a link message or a chat message (as llRegionSayTo) from one script to another.  If you have more complicated, looped sounds, you can play them in sync with llLoopSoundMaster and llLoopSoundSlave in different prims.
