In short:

Even though some people call it a game, Second life is not a game in the traditional sense. There are no goals or levels to achieve. It is entiryely up to you what you make of it, and what you get out of it.

Read through the info in the link Cinnamon gave, and you should be a bit wiser as to what SL is, and then go out and have a good time.

If you are on the new viewer that has basic and advanced modes, on  basic mode, you will only be able to do things such as move around and communicate. You can click on the 'destinations' button at the bottom of the screen.  Then click on the 'new user' category and New Citizens Inc. that is a great place with very helpful people and tons of freebies.

However you will need to logout and log back in on advanced mode before you can collect freebies or go shopping, as there is no inventory on basic mode.
