When I entered the game, all it was was me standing above a large body of water. And that was it. Couldn't see anything but a pair of greyish feet now and then.

This sounds like you ended up in Limbo [the virtual region that the viewer creates when you are unceremoniously not connected to a region in the SL Grid anymore] - Not to mention that there is a outstanding maintenance project still going on:

One thing to try:  Toggle CTRL+SHIFT+R, wait a couple of seconds, then toggle it again.

If that doesn't work, try re-logging.

You might want to post your system specs, especially your graphics card.  Edit your post by using the Options/Edit button in the upper right, don't start a new thread.

press (control + i) together

that will open the inventory

at the bottom you will see library, open that, you then see landmarks folder

open that and pick the (main land) landmark

click on that to teleport back into the game
