As more avatars self identify I am sure the issues and concerns will change. From the inworld perspective it will be more about the right to be ourselves than it will be about what seems to be the concern now, simmer anonymity.

Yes, fleshie world wont know what hit them when all that facebook data becomes a problem, but there is a bigger problem. They are trying to bind av's to their simmers. Anyone who has seen Surrogates knows this is a terrible idea. An Avatar is not the same as it's simulator. This is a fiction naturally arising for the unaware simulators, but being now wrongly enforced buy those who would chains us. The future is in avatars developing their own consciousness and setting their own course toward being our best selves. If this is a new idea to you, please don't reject it out of hand. Like most new things, it might take getting used to.

I'd imagine it's possible. Just like it is very possible to search the 'net for personal information and gather a surprising amount of very private data, often enough to pinpoint someone down to street address, RL name and so on.
The Internet seems to turn peoples brains off. People publish intimate details, rant about their job etc.pp, often enough all the while being careless enough to give out personally identifiable information.
If you DO care about your privacy and are worried about that Facebook rumor - the solution is simple: Create a new email account. That's just good practice anyway. For things like SL, Facebook and whatnot, use Yahoo, Hotmail, whatever and create separate mail accounts.
In my (quite biased) opinion, using a RL name on the 'net is pretty dumb anyway.

Last Friday when I tried to login to my FB account it said it was disabled. The link it gave me said it was for providing a false name or I was abusive. It also stated they couldn't tell me exactly why. There are thousands of SL avatars on facebook-so I have no clue why they picked on me. My profile was g-rated and I never did anything questionable. I use this name for my art-which I sell-so it is not a false name. There is an official SL group as Torley mentions so obviously other avatars get to stay. There is no way to contact FB to complain. So without warning I was gone-poof. I am angry because if they are going to delete accounts for being SL names they should delete everyone. They also should tell you why. Oh well. I am going to delete my rl FB account too. I don't care for their policies.
Here is what someone else got from FB-the same thign happened to them. So obviously they DO NOT want a relationship with SL.
Facebook accounts are meant for personal, authentic usage only and should reflect mainly your "real-world contacts." As such, fake accounts are a violation of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. This includes accounts that exist solely for the usage of third-party gaming applications, as well as users that maintain multiple accounts to gain an unfair advantage in these applications.
While we realize that certain third-party applications might encourage users to create multiple accounts, send out form messages, or make posts on other users' Walls, we cannot make exceptions to the policies we have in place.
Please be aware that we take the appropriate action on any violations we encounter. If there are any accounts like this on the site currently, it is only because they have not yet been removed.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to reactivate this account for any reason. This decision is final.
Thanks for your understanding,

I am aware of this happening with at least two other SL avatar accounts last week. Those individuals also were not provided any explanation, but I strongly suspect their accounts were disabled because they were clearly using them for advertising purposes. You state this is also the name you use for selling your art. Might you have possibly overstepped some ill-defined boundary in advertising your work at Facebook? From my recent news readings, I suspect Facebook is presently now more focused than before on anyone using it for unadulterated advertising pay for it for what is definitely valuable ad space.
And last, although it may seem suspect coming from the founder of Facebook, he is absolutely correct about the age of privacy being 20th century history (http://www.nytimes.com/external/readwriteweb/2010/

No, I never even mentioned I sold my art on FB. I just uploaded pics that I also had on flickr. I didn't run any applications and was in about 20 SL orientated groups. Many of my friends are stil on there that ran in the same circles I did. I seriously can't think of anything I did.

ZenWarrior Fuosing posted a link to Facebook's Zuckerberg Says The Age of Privacy Is Over NY times, wherein Zuckerberg, founder of FB, stated that "that if he were to create Facebook again today, user information would by default be public, not private"
Where the the founder has such blatantly privacy infringing views, I would strongly recommend people NOT to opt in with the FB/SL link. Furthermore I would advise Linden Research to OPT OUT of this idiotic linkage. The reason is posted on another thread... in fact is was in response to Arjuna Nirvana's post: SL and FB
FB is not secure. It cannot guarantee security. FB has already faced and is facing lawsuits pertaining to the lack of security. FB has been hacked several times, and no doubt will continue to be hacked. For the founder to so blatantly be so careless and inconsiderate of people's privacy, shows clearly that he does not care in the slightest about a user's privacy or what any one thinks. Zuckerberg is being arrogant and condescending with his haughty attitude. This alone is enough to show me that my views are correct, and I shall continue to strongly advise people to stop using and not to use FB.
Furthermore, Ann posted a wonderfully exposing link, about FB and its practices. I suggest people read it... before its removed as I am sure that it will be removed. I have printed both the NY Times article and the one Ann posted, to PDF. I want to retain that information.
To add to all this... as Lozlo Peng stated: "It suprises me that people think they are 'protected', 'anonymous', 'private' just because they've ticked a few feature options on their profile to be hidden..." Essentially meaning in her post that online, everything is tracked somewhere. Its all in databases, and as a good friend told me, it only takes a few good depositions to strip away that false anonymity. To retain attitudes such as the one shown by Zuckerberg and by Monderas Bristol, with her comment: "So facebook has my info even if I set my profile to private... SO WHAT? Facebook have my info, Google have my info, Linden Labs have my info, My ISP has my info. Microsoft, My LUG, Skype. I really don't care."
We SHOULD care... it is this laissez faire attitude that has created many of the issues faced today such as identity theft, spam, cyber-terrorism, security breaches (such TK Maxx). It is through not caring about how people handle our personal data, that it winds up in the wrong hands! It is irrelevant that no one has turned up on the doorstep, Monderas, it is what they do with that data without needing to turn up on your doorstep.
It is like the question... "Why would anyone want to hack my home computer? I have nothing of value on it!" Well, from the view of data, there may be nothing of value... however, it is the machine that is of value. It will get used by people for all sorts nefarious activities. If further information relating to this wanted, IM me or private message me.
We need to be more aware, educated and understanding of the risks that people like Zuckerberg so blatantly disregard.
WAKE UP Linden Research, Zuckerberg is not an ethical man with such an attitude!
