Can someone please explain what this is?  Some kind of viewer?

Thanks.

RLV - Restrained Love Viewer.

Note that links in this post may require cautious viewing. I'm not responsible for third party websites, etc.

It was created as an third-party API (not a viewer, although a viewer specialising in RLV functionality does exist) to SL that allows LSL scripts to limit or change Viewer settings. Essentially it passes commands to the viewer using specially constructed llOwnerSay messages. There is also RLVa, a fork of RLV code that has some alternative functionality and different commands.

Examples:-

  • Force Windlight (sky, water settings) to a specific appearance
  • Prevent users from leaving mouselook
  • Prevent users from teleporting
  • Prevent users from talking in local, or IM.
  • Much more.

Its roots were in the BDSM sub-culture present within SL, to allow attachments and furniture to 'lock' and similar, but it has a lot of applications. It's well used today throughout the grid, allowing users to 'cross the bridge' and actively shape users experiences by directly talking to their viewers.

You are most welcome.

If you have any more specific questions I am sure they will be answered.

ETA: Oh, one important thing I missed. RLV can be turned on or off at any time, meaning that all RLV commands are opt-in and optional. No-one can be 'trapped' or locked against their will using this system.

to add a bit, if I may, to Freya's post....RLV basically allows you to control the actions of another AV (or have them control you) by accessing the item containing the RLV controls. In other words (because that was even confusing to me) if you are wearing a collar (and provided RLV is active on your viewer) I can make you do any number of things using the "owner say" commands. (Very well put, by the way) The basics are animations, clothing, appearance (locking items so they can not be changed) etc. There are more advanced items that actually allow complete control over another user. The one I've seen most often is icontrol.

The RLV can be obtained in a number of different ways...I know of only two since I've only used two viewers.

The SL viewer does not have RLV capabilities in it. You have to go to the website that Freya mentioned

Firestorm has the option in the viewer to enable RLV commands. I'm not sure exactly where it is...somewhere in preferences.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...If you are planning on using RLV, be careful who you give the control to. That person will be able to do whatever they want to you. It can be removed, as stated above, but make sure you trust the person that you let on your collar.

good luck

I'll come back and add a couple of things too.

1.  RLV being enabled in the viewer will permit absolutely NO control whatsoever UNLESS you are also wearing (or have rezzed in the same region) a product which is scripted to issue commands to the owner (llOwnerSay in script terms).

Thus, having RLV enabled and not wearing anything, nobody can do a thing, nothing will happen, you won't get pregnant, nobody can steal all your L$ and they can't take your inventory.  Actually, none of these are possible with RLV enabled and a product in use either but some think they can.

2.  There are many other RLV products that are a bunch of fun other than "collars"

Correct. I only said collars because they are the most common. I have a nosering that I use on people who don't want to wear collars...and there are RLV devices as well (gags, blindfolds, arm restrainers...just about anything you can imagine).

Yes, RLV will not allow someone to steal anything from you..it only allows control. You are willingly (sort of) giving up control of yourself to another for whatever purpose you both agree upon.

As I said, just be careful with it..if you're the one who's giving up control

I think I know what you mean, but this statement is a little confusing.

The person in control can issue a command to the 'controlled' person from another region.

For instance forced teleport.

The above statement only refers to the 'controlled' person's side of the equation.

My statement was precise and 100% accurate.  The other person can only have added that TP Lure to the RLV accept list IF the RLV viewer user is wearing (or has an item rezzed in the same sim as them) a scripted item that issues llOwnerSay RLV commands to their viewer.

It is simple enough to issue commands that can be sent from sim to sim via http, email, xml/rpc for example but, the person receiving those must be wearing or have an object rezzed in the same sim, that executes the actual RLV commands.

I hope that makes it clearer? :smileyhappy:
