Is it really your perception that it's been only 34 million seconds ( (late 2014 - early 2006)*365*24*60*60/8 )? Although SL is virtual, my memories of it are on my RL timeline, and it feels like I've been here forever.

I'm good at numbers and bad at words - I do love that you did the math. However, I'm willing to ignore the truncation of a year to exactly 365.0 days if you'll permit me to experience the interweaving of my timelines in a way that doesn't make me feel like I've been here forever, too. I just worked out that 34 million seconds is almost 4% of my total real life to date. :D

That'll be my last statistic for today, I promise.

Me a native secondlifer. ough

Me been here since for ever..

Me enter to SL and it was a paradise!

I could chat - build and - uh oh have the chance to LOVE! (Money adiction came afterwords)

Nothing change. Just the way the avatar looks and the mesh income.

I still want to have love - chat - build with the SAME exitement.

And yes .. lag is a myth these days.. :D

Population change..

Because no more:  people from Brazil and Indochina who was making from camping pads kinda like 2 dalla per day and so,

they could FEED them families with fishes and chickens!!!

Because no more: gamblers who was spending their Last pennie and let them wifes hungry...

Those were the days my friend...

as they said above.. i have seen 75k my self in weekends.

Today all i see is hundrends of alter avatars going fishing and collecting coins..

but! but but !!! I see also YOUNGSTERS!!!!

Who read in google about SL and they join it and they come and ask me all about it!

Thats a really great pleasure!

So, yes!

Nothing have change in my end.

It's impossible for SL to be the same experience for me as when I first discovered it. I am not the same person that first logged in almost seven years ago, nor do I live in the same real world. The thrill of the new belongs to the noobs. The rest of us must resort to other ways to get our thrills.

After 8 years of SL, some of my interests are different but the base concept of why I log in is the same. Even RL has changed over the last 10 years.

For me, creation is my main focus in SL with socializing next. Both of those aspects haven't changed much in my 8 years. All that really changes are the people and the trends. One of the things I love about SL is I make it what I wish it to be not what others think it should be. Do that and SL will never really change :)

I have been here 9 years plus.  And i do miss SL of old.  It was small and friendly, same group of people were at your favorite club, and you actually saw people you knew when you were out exploring.  I can't imagine trying to make your way new in SL now.  Bigger and many times the people but much more empty, and much less freindly.

As for the changes, some have been good, some not so good but that is the way of all things.

When they first rolled out place to place TP's (previously we landed in hubs and had to use the map and fly the rest of the way to our destinations) We use to come out of teleports stripped of all attachments, yep that means you were naked, then they got it to only your hair was up your butt after a tp.  I mean that literally lol you hair was attached to your butt.  but that was fixed.

Casinos were huge, then LL shut them all down.  Now they seem to be back with a lot more strings attached.

You could IM a Linden if you ran across a greifer, or needed a sim restart.  They not only responded but would TP to help.

I remember the 1st flex prims.. hair just freaked me out.. micro prims were not common then and i swear some of the flex hair looked like the head of madusa.

Then there was windlight, sculpties, mesh.. and a hundred other changes i have not mentioned.

I use to pass my days building.. but i have no desire, nor the energy anymore to learn mesh.

Better or worse.. I am not sure there is a clear answer.

SL's definitely hugely different for me now compared to four years ago. When I joined in 2010, it swallowed up a huge amount of my leisure time - these days, I rarely log on more than once a week, and rarely stay on for more than an hour.

This could be because SL has changed or I have, but I must admit to missing the days when you'd seemingly run into random characters everywhere - vampire clan recruiters, beggars, the obligatory Gor couple, nutters and people in superhero costumes. Playing 'sim roulette' on world map search always unearthed something interesting. Again, I could have enjoyed it more then as it was all a novelty to me back then, but it seems SL has become a lot more predictable in the past 12-18 months - can't remember the last time I saw a club, build or event that made me think 'Wow, this is great'.

I think I'd be more interested in returning regularly if I was extremely skilled at scripting or building. I still love the concept of SL, I just find it harder to feel the same excitement about it anymore.

yeah , I can understand that ....and it probably answers the question of who plays sl ? a certain percentage are obviously new to sl so still going through the "in awe" phase ... and another percentage use it as an extension of social media and, the rest are probably in sl for " creative " reasons ......ie ..building ,  or scripting .........which as already mentioned earlier has become difficult because of  the learning curve to creating with mesh ......and also for most scripting ( except for possibly simple copy & paste) also seems a more difficult learning curve which most people  are simply unwilling to do.So i  guess the whole creative content of sl has been changed by the arrival of mesh ........... whereas before almost anyone could build ,so you got all sorts of weird and wonderful designs ,  now its only a very few who are adept at mesh who are creating  the future  of sl with their rather somewhat limited ideas .........thats not meant to offend any creators ...,  just means if more are to  create ,  you get more variety :))

This is not my first account (I had to get rid of the old one for personal reasons I won't go into) and I've seen a lot of changes over the years, both good and bad.

Bad things that really stand out to me are the removal of the First Name, Surname system. I actually LOVED that about SL when I first joined all those years ago and not being able to have that with this Avvie was actually such a bummer. I felt like it made it seem like your avvie actually was a real person rather than just a username, if that makes sense,

Secondly the orientation is awful. I swear when I first joined all those years back we had a tutorial of sorts with signs to read about how to change appearance, how to fly, how to do this and that where-as now all I remember is being thrown into it and expected to fend for myself (and don't even get me started on the starter mesh avatars, they are hideous and if you're knew with no idea how to take them off they are a big deterrant to new members imo).

Thirdly, although there are a lot of people I've found the people who actually do message me out of the blue are mostly people looking to cyber, otherwise people do keep to themselves, which I suppose I do too but I suffer from anxiety and I have always used SL as an outlet for social interaction without the pressure of being face-to-face but I do still find it hard to strike up conversation so I often find myself wandering around alone unless a friend is online and wants to explore with me.

As for the good, well it LOOKS better as a whole. I read a lot of bad things in this thread about mesh but I love the introduction of mesh. I sport an anime style avatar with the M3 head and Kemono body and it would have been impossible to look so cute before mesh but now I actually get to be how I want to be. I also found that the introduction of mesh has allowed me to really get into creating. I never got into texturing or prim making but I found mesh inspired me and now I'm actually doing constructive things which gets me excited to continue to learn and create. I feel like it's made me excited for the future in terms of creation and what could be achieved. They should have introduced mesh a long, long time ago IMO.

well i  guess the reason  for changing the system of naming avs was theres only so many names to be used in the world:}} as for your comments on  being creative with mesh ,  but not with prims and textures .........I dont really understand  how anyone can find mesh easier , unless they are doing something similar as a career or educational study , but i guess people like you will be the future of sl ........... well, at least as long as it lasts ......... :)

I been In sl for 5 Years and lot like the people here i seen the good and bad..  The good like Mesh.. well some mesh it was Terrible headache getting used to mesh Clothes and Avatars but after awhile i got used to it I definitely like some of the Mesh furry avies that are out now. The New viewers . they give more control than previous years and My friends. yes my friends that i have met during my 5 years in sl

The bad.. For one the lag.. a constant problem for some  than there's Sandbox griefing  No matter what public sandbox you go too there's always a chance of a Greifer attack.. And there's the Heavily Scripted Avies .. and running out of things to do. Once you learned how to build,Script and own land,Clubs and such what else is there to do?

So i guess it balances itself out

I think what made it easier was that you can just create the whole thing in one attachment instead of having to try and envision a top and what bits need to be made into a sculptie attachment and what bit needs to be made as a texture etc etc. And with things like Marvelous Designer making a mesh dress is not much different from making a dress in RL with the pattern making etc and I'm a trained seamstress in RL (though it's not what I do for work at the moment it's still something I have experience in) so I suppose that's where I find it easier, the only differences would be just tweaking, retopology (if you're working with Marvelous Designer meshes anyway) and rigging, but once you're used to the program you're using to do all that in and you've learnt the basics, those things aren't that complex at all. :matte-motes-bashful-cute-2:

well yeah , I think that is a problem a lot of people have in sl ...........after , the initial phase of exploring , learning to build and/or script , clubs, music ,(not forgetting the obvious) etc  etc ........what is there left to do ? well many and this includes myself  get into roleplay , this gives you a reason  for being in sl , and also a fun way of interacting with new friends . There are lots of roleplay sims ,  do not be put off by all the Gor  sims (,if thats not your thing )  there are many ,  many other types of  roleplay sims . From ancient times through to modern times ......something for everyone

By changing the system, LL drastically reduced the number of names available. Under the old system, there could be as many Kellis as there were surnames. Now, with everyone having the same surname (Resident). there is only one Kelli available as an account name. Once you use up all the obvious variations (spelling and varying uses of case), you have to resort to adding numbers for a unique login. Even if LL had never added any new surnames, the potential number of combinations was vast.

As I recall (I can't find the documentation now) one of the reasons, possibly even the primary reason given, was that during the sign up process people were abandoning registration at the name choice page.  Somehow it was concluded that this was being caused by the surnames.

So it was abandoned with little thought given to future problems.

As to your other point about the number of names available there are (were) 151,096 GossipGirls.  LINK.  Before abandoning surnames there were a total of 10889 surnames used.

8 years old and I miss the old SL as well.  Really miss update Wednesdays.  They were a pain, but jumping onto beta with a couple of friends and hanging out chatting while we waited for the world to return were some of my fondest memories.

I even miss the random sim crashes, getting orbited occassionally, but not having my hair shoved down to my crotch when teleporting.

I totally agree. I am not to excited aboutt he mesh scene myself. Yes most of the clothing looks ok, but adjusting myself to fit everything is really a pain. I feel that everything you said has alot of truth to it and because designers are only catering to mesh/appliers etc its making alot of the older SL'ers stray to simpler times

Even after 2 years in SL it isnt the same as when we first started. I have been here for 7.5 years. Still occassionally wear a box, mainly because it is a boxed item that says wearable on the MP.

Does it seem like there are less people in SL now? Did you pay any attention to the online numbers back then? 12K was a busy night. Currently it is 5:26 AM SLT and there are 31,743 people online. Sounds like a hell of a lot more. However, there were less sims back then, so the land was smaller with less places to go so it seemed fuller. Now there are people who spend their whole time with their partner or alone on their sim. Sounds pretty boring to me.

Personally, I would love to see a LL run place with music and dancing where people can socialize. Might breathe some life back into SL. Or the appearance of it anyway.

Arent there tons of places to go listen to music and chat with people?
