How can I prevent non-friends from seeing through my profile that I am logged on?

Where the setting is depends on which viewer you are using, but it is in preferences. If you are using Firestorm, I believe it is under privacy. In the official viewers, I am not sure exactly which tab it is, but it is there. There is a checkbox that you can either check, or uncheck, to allow people to see whether you are on or offline if they check your profile.

People can still see if you're on or offline though, it's not hard to find out. The only true way to hide your online status, is to not log on at all.

I dont know but the other day I was trying on costume and had alpha that made my avi INVISIBLE!

I thought it would be useful for wandering around sl when I didnt want ppl to know I was there
:)

People would know you are there, your tag and your dot on the map and mini-map, lol.

But, I like using a full invisible av when I go to really busy sims or things like hair fair, for example. Cuts way down on my resource use :)

Welcome to Second Life Forums, italianne

There is always a way to be able to see when someone is online, but if you are having a Greta Garbo moment and "vant to be alone", just create a spare account with which to go a-wandering around SL anonymously. There is nothing at all compelling you to speak to anyone, and in every inventory you can find avatars that may look less inviting to talk to than others (look under Body Parts - I think the cardboard box avatar is quite a fun one that doesn't tend to attract much in the way of conversationalists).
