Hi there,

I'm pretty new to second life and a lot of people told me to use a third party viewer like phoenix, singularity and firestorm, But the problem I get is that I totally lag out. On the lowest graphic settings I get about Fps. But when I use viewer 3 on the highest setting I get around 50 fps. My laptop spec is: Intel core i5-2410m cpu @ 2.30GHz, 6 gig ram, Bit operating system, windows 7, and intel HD graphics family card (1.7gb video ram, pixel and vertex shader version 4.1). I have recently played skyrim, BF3, MW3 Assassins creed-revelations all on this laptop on medium to second highest settings. I have 10-12mb broadband speed swell.

I have asked a lot of people in SL what they think might be the problem and no one knows, so thus I come to the forums.

Can anyone by any chance give me an answers?

Does your laptop have a power-saving system that automatically switches from Intel graphics to a more powerful specialized graphics processor? I very strongly suspect that if you're getting good performance with other game-type applications your laptop doesn't always run Intel graphics. Go into Viewer 3, go to "Help" - "About Second Life" and copy and paste the information into a reply in this thread, and then do the same thing in one of the third-party viewers. It sounds like the TPV's aren't using your best graphics capability. Most auto-switching laptops have a way of forcing them to run with the good graphics. Also, don't try to run graphically-intensive programs off battery power because that will trigger power saving.

OPen your nVidia control panel. You should be able to right-click on a blank part of your screen desktop background and see the NVIDIA Control Panel.

Once open in the 3D section select Manage 3D settings in the left window.

Then select the Program Settings tab in the right hand window. Look for an entry for Second Life in the drop down. If it is there, note all the settings. Then create a new setting for your other viewers. You will see an ADD button. Click it and navigate to your Firestorm folder: C:\Program Files\Firestorm-Release (make sure you have the new 1691 Firestorm that was released yesterday). In the folder select the program: Firestorm-Release.exe. Change the settings to match those you copied from Second Life.

If there is no Second Life entry, just use the global settings that come in as default. Look to see if the panel gives you a choice of which GPU to use. It is the laptop deciding that Firestorm is not GPU intense that is the problem. All you need to do is make sure the laptop know Firestorm is a graphics intense program.

Run plugged in to wall power. Laptops try to conserve power when running on battery. One way to do that is to shut down the nVidia GPU.

If you can't choose a GPU, set Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance.

If you are wandering about all the other settings in there see: Graphics Tweaking for Second Life
