Last week, the Linden Blog caried a list of the new features of the last year, and what is to come. I'm not sure that all the new features are so wonderful, but that's opinion. Anyone seen any stuff that uses Pathfinding yet?

A Look Back at Improvements to Second Life in 2012 and Forward to 2013

What sticks out as factually wrong is the reference to Threaded Region Crossing: Also to this end, we introduced threaded region crossing to improve teleporting performance and reduce lag when you move from one region to another,

It's still something that is only being tested on the Beta grid. There's a couple of other items that are mentioned as having already been done, when they might only be available in a Project Viewer. That is, they're still being tested. And wasn't one of the "Advanced Creator Tools" hastily withdrawn over a security issue?

It's been a year since we saw these things appear in Linden Realms. And there is the steady rumble of complaining merchants over in the Commerce forums. I wonder if the guy who wrote that piece of puffery knows anything about SL. Who told him that threaded region crossing was in use?

The first phase of threaded region crossing did indeed roll to the main grid in May 2012. The second phase is what is on the preview grid now, it builds on the prior work.

Pathfinding by its nature is for ambitious projects, and those are only beginning to come on the market. I know of at least one FPS game and a couple of breedable systems that are already using it., and there are numerous personal items using it. Note that Linden Realms did not use this pathfinding system. Instead, that game highlighted shortcomings in LSL that prompted the company to add something better.

One of the creator tools, llTeleportAgent, was disabled for a short time. It was forgotten that an older version of the function already existed on the grid that didn't look at permissions. This problem was corrected, and also tighter permissions were also put on the teleport functions, then it was reenabled. A very important component of these tools, the experience permissions system, has not yet been introducted.

CHUI is still in a probject viewer, but the new HTTP library was released. The blog post called that a beta feature, it must have been written a few days in advance.

I agree about Pathfinding, which seemed like an idea with limited appeal when it was as announced and has failed even to live up to that promise. They may get the serious bugs out of it some day, but it will probably never be much more than a toy for R P Sims. Threaded region crossing has been an evolving feature with good potential for some time. It has been responsible for getting rid of the old "Mono bug", for example. Region crossings can still be bumpy, especially if you are in a fast vehicle on an R C sim,but they were lots worse in the old days.

LL has added some dumb features over the years. On balance, though, there have been more good ones than bad ones, and we have usually been able to ignore the ones we don' t need.

I've seen some pathfinding and it looks great.

There's some linked in the thread that says "pathfinding" in its subject line...

The problem is that LLs is sometimes adding features no one has requested and ignoring the ones people ask for. And this may be one of them.

- But if it were to work fully at some point, it would be ideal for roleplay regions. However it has a major failing in that there is still no good way to animate the objects that are moving on a path... So you can have vehicles driving around, or boxes on a conveyor belt - but forget about doing a herd of bison or a village of santa's elves... :)
