Destination Island is the place where a new avatar is first logged into Second Life.  There are actually several identical Destination Islands...when one becomes too crowded, new log ins are directed to another one.

The island looks like an amphitheater, set into a grove of pudgy mesh trees.  Seven doors, each to a different category of Destination, are ranged about the amphitheater.  When you enter one, you are teleported to a random Destination within that category.

Once a new avatar leaves Destination Island, he or she is considered an "experienced resident" of Second Life, and can no longer return there.  Destination Island is ONLY for brand new avatars.

But you can see the Destination Islands on the Map.  Type in "Destination Island" in the map search window.

Destination Island is the latest attempt by LL to provide a "New User Experience".  In my opinion, it's the biggest failure yet.  The volunteer Mentor program should be re-instituted; new users need live helpers to explain things.  Destination Island doesn't even provide a rudimentary tutorial, it just dumps the newcomer straight into Second Life, more or less at random.
