Welcome to Second Life, Emma!

You should read a few things before you get more frustrated with SL's learning curve.

I think you are "wearing" or "adding" your furniture instead of rezzing it on the ground.

Drag your furniture items from the inventory window to the floor of your house. Then right-click the things and select "Edit" from the drop down menu. Use the colored axis arrows to move things around, hold down the Control key to get circles for rotating them.

You may find some of the things you purchase are packed in boxes, here's how to open those...

You can take building classes at NCI, Builders Brewery and Caledon Oxbridge University.

When the curse words start to bubble up (as they have for all of us), hang tight, or go play with that cutie-pie of yours. Yes, I perved your profile.

Best wishes to you and your family!

You've gotten great advice.  Now here is a little tip:  One mistake novice furniture-putter-downers often make is leaving the furniture floating a few inches above the floor.  When placing furniture, move your camera all around it and look at it from several angles.  Then use Right Click/Edit/and the positioning arrows to carefully tweak its placement.
