Can I post a chat transcript from SL onto the web?

I seem to recall that many moons a go posting a chat transcript onto the web violated the SL Terms of Service (TOS).  Is that still the case? Am I living in a different decade?

You can't post or share a chat log without the permission of all people that were involved, in SL or any website owned by LL.  LL has no authority to stop you from posting to other web sites though.  If it is a website associated with SL the owner of the site might prohibit it, so you need to check the rules.

That said, if you are doing it due to a grudge or being mad and someone, it is best not to do this as it usually ends up causing unnecessary drama and reflects poorly on you unless you have permission from the participants to do it.  Also, since chat logs are easy to alter or forge, they really don't prove anything to a discriminating reader.

I don't think it has ever been the case that posting transcripts anywhere other than inworld or in the SL forums is against T.o.S.   It certainly isn't now, as Linden Lab Official: Residents' privacy rights explains:

Sharing or posting a conversation inworld or in the Second Life forums without consent of all involved Residents is a violation of the Terms of Service.

NOTE: This does not include posting of chat to social media sites or other websites. Posting such logs on web pages, emailing them, or printing them out and posting them on utility poles in the "real world" -- are all actions beyond the scope of the Second Life Terms of Service. ; while that might be illegal, but those laws must be enforced by the proper law enforcement agencies
