Abandoned land is a mainland parcel that has been returned to Linden Lab by the previous owner.
How to abandon land
Open the World menu and select About Land. The About Land window opens.
In the General tab of the About Land window, click Abandon Land.
How to tell if land is abandoned
Abandoned land is owned by Governor Linden and contains the term "Abandoned Land" in the parcel name. The parcel description often includes the name of the previous owner.
Land that is owned by a valid account is not abandoned, even if it appears to be unused.
What happens to abandoned land
When a mainland parcel is abandoned, the ownership of the parcel changes to Governor Linden. There is no Linden dollar (L$) grant related to abandoned land. Once abandoned, the parcel settings are amended to reflect the abandoned status and auto-return settings are enabled after one week.
Note: This program applies only to Linden-owned Mainland areas and does not include Private Regions.
I abandoned my land by mistake!
You should never expect to be able to reclaim abandoned land. Please use care to make sure that any abandonment action is intentional. However, if you do make a mistake, please submit a support case as soon as possible. Include the parcel location and explain that you would like to reclaim a parcel you abandoned by mistake. We can attempt to make a one-time courtesy effort to recover the land for you.
How to request purchase of abandoned land
If you find abandoned land that you would like to own, please make the request by submitting a support case. If you do not have a solid claim to the parcel (see below), we will try to make the land available via auction or abandoned land sale. There are some cases where we may not be able to make abandoned land available for sale.
To request sale of abandoned land, submit a support case in Land/Parcel Issues and provide the details of your request.
There are cases in which Linden Lab sells abandoned land directly to a Resident who has a solid claim on it. We attempt to give priority to those who already have land in the region. If two neighboring parcels both have a reasonable claim on the parcel, it will likely not qualify for direct sale. In some cases, we can assist with subdividing larger parcels for those with a strong claim.
A strong claim for a direct sale includes but is not limited to the following:
Land you own borders three sides of an abandoned parcel.
Land you own completely encircles the abandoned parcel.
The requested land is awkward or irregularly shaped.
The requested land does not neighbor yours, but you are an established resident of the same region.
These are only guidelines; each request is considered on a case-by-case basis, and Linden Lab may not sell the land to you even if you meet some or all of the claims.
Purchasing abandoned land already for sale
There may be some abandoned land already for sale. These recycled parcels are named "Abandoned Land - For Sale". Recycled land parcels are not listed in Search but can be found by visiting a region and looking at parcel descriptions. They will also highlight on the map as land for sale.
Note: If land is owned by Governor Linden and is named “Abandoned Land - For Sale,” please submit a support case for further review. If the parcel is named “Abandoned Land - For Sale” but is Resident owned, the Resident may not have changed the name after purchasing it. This land is probably not for sale.
Once you find a parcel you are interested in purchasing, open the About Land information by right clicking your mouse on the land. Then click on Buy Land. Abandoned land is priced at L$1 per square meter (pricing subject to change); in addition, tiered pricing applies to the parcel’s maintenance fee. Depending on the size of the parcel, abandoned land may also require approval of an additional monthly land tier.
Review of land that looks abandoned
If you find a parcel that appears to be owned by a defunct account or group, there is a possibility that we can make the parcel available for sale. However, please note that land owned by a valid account or group is not abandoned, even if it appears to be unused. Please bear in mind that many Residents have annual accounts, and it may take many months for the account status to expire if they have chosen to leave or use a different account. Land cannot be reclaimed simply due to inactivity.
