It's not too hard to find out someone's IP address.  Any time you use streaming audio or streaming media on the internet (including in SL) the provider of the stream has the ability to know your IP address.

And simply knowing someone's IP address is not against the Terms of Service.

BUT!

Passing that information on to anyone else, IS a violation of the Terms of Service, and a serious one.  LL considers it a violation of privacy.

Perhaps more importantly, your friend is being very foolish if she thinks that knowing IP addresses is positive identification of the person behind the avatar.  Different people can have the same IP address, and one person can use different IP addresses, so any "alt detection" tool based on comparing IP addresses is very likely to be wrong.
