Trying to work something out... 1. whether it's possible or not to make a transparent area on the object's texture phantom, while leaving the rest of  the colored space solid, and 2. if it is possible, how to accomplish it? Do i need a script or.. something else?

and if it's not possible, are there alternatives that don't require masses of prims?

Thanks for any help given, much appreciated :)

Depends what you mean by "object" there is a huge difference between objects and prims, an object can have many prims in which if each prim is carefully textured you can accomplish what you want. If you are talking about a single prim then no, it cannot be done.

I guess you can also accomplish what you want in a mesh object, however it is hard to say for sure since we do not know exactly what shape or thing you are trying to make.

The best way to make a low-prim arched doorway is to make a mesh object.  That way, the opening is a real opening and the walls around it are texturable and non-phantom.  Just be sure to set the mesh object to type Prim instead of Convex Hull so that you can walk through the opening.
