What Rolig said is true.  And there is really no way around that.

Another problem that I've seen in some homes is the creator applying "glow" to walls.  So if everything looks bright even though it is night, if your house is Mod, check and see if glow has been applied.  I've had to set a few houses to 'zero.'

ETA, you may need to choose "select face" to see if "glow" has been applied.  It is possible to apply "glow" to just one side (face) of a prim.

I agree!
There is a way around the ambient light
Turn on shadows and the inside of the house will be shaded by walls and roof (unless the outside is made transparent)

Actually the light in SL is only ambient if you turn down sunlight and moonlight in the windlight settings
Otherwise objects are highlighted on surfaces facing the sun (moon)
