The return of the full alpha texture?

Been thinking a bit about 100% transparent faces.

They used to be done with full alpha textures but then of course LL introduced the transparency feature as a better alternative.

But now we also have one bit alphas and I wonder, wouldn't the most efficient way to make a face fully transparent today be to use a small (say 32x32 or 64x64 pixel) fully transparent texture with alpha masking?
