That ping time may be at least part of the problem.  Ping time measures how long it takes a signal to travel between your computer and Lindfen Lab's servers.  If it is taking as long as 240ms, your viewer can be seriously out of snyc with the servers.  That will result in "rubber banding" (jerky, irregular movements) and incomplete loading of textures.  My ping time is normally between 50 and 70ms.  That's fairly normal anywhere in North America. Ping times are greater in Europe and South America because of the increased distance, so SL residents in the UK, for example, may have normal ping times in the range of 150ms.  Residents in Australia commonly complain about serious lag problems, because their ping times can regularly be over 200ms.  If you are using a satellite connection, even in North America, you could have an even worse ping time.

Many performance issues in SL can be traced to irregular, unreliable Internet connections.  Usually bandwidth is not the problem, but stability is.  Problems can be more apparent if you have a very detailed avatar or are wearing complex mesh clothing.   Check your router and modem -- be sure that you reboot them regularly -- and consider using a direct LAN cable to connect your computer to the router instead of using wireless.
