Are you new?

You may be using one of the newer mesh starteravatars. Those are nearly no customizeable at all. To wear a different skin you need to change to one of the older starteravtars, which you can find in your libary in the inventory.

You have to buy skin in order to change it. Go to the marketplace,they have a lot of 0$L Skins for sale.
