Dumoktheartist
Clarification: My budget is a bit restrictive, and I am aiming for SL-ish level of quality...Or at least with a learning curve I can live with.
MIstahMoose
Blender, gimp, sculptris Blender/gimp is all you need to start on the road of 3D. Sculptris is an added bonus if you want to learn sculpting. All are free
MIstahMoose
Also, hundreds of YouTube tuts for blender. So easy to learn as well. Keywords to start : basic modeling tutorial, UV unwrapping, and texturing. Avoid diving into animstion, rigging etc for blender. Modeling and texturing is what you'll want to focus on for SL. Tutorials for creating game assets can be very helpful as well
