If you couldn't use/wear a gun, you wouldn't see nearly as many available inworld or on the marketplace.

Just remember, there's a time and place for everything. Many guns are highly scripted, and you may exceed the allowed script limit on some sims, or cause loads of lag. In that case, you'd be told to remove it.

Some sims allow guns, some don't. Some sims you can wear guns but not use them; others you can do both, some you can do neither. Check the rules on a sim BEFORE you bring a gun there.

There are two sets of rules for guns in Second Life.  One is based on technology...where and when and how weapons will, or won't, work.

Guns work by rezzing fast moving, temporary objects...bullets.  The bullets can do various forms of damage, depending on how they are made...but they can only be created in areas that allow you to rez objects.  A gun fired on land where you don't have rez permission will go "bang" but it won't do anything.

Guns will also not work in areas that have scripts disabled.  You might not even be able to draw it, in such places.

Most areas in SL are "no push, no damage."  Even if your bullets will rez in these places, the amount of damage they will do is limited.  Combat areas, on the other hand, are damage-enabled.  On this type of land, you can "kill" an avatar with your gun.  But the only thing that happens is that they will be returned to their Home location.  Death in SL is not very fatal.

That's the technology.  The other set of rules is social.

Any landowner makes the rules for her land.  She can permit combat, permit worn weapons, or prohibit all weapons.  It's completely up to her...and, she can change her mind at any time and for any, or no, reason.  If a landowner doesn't like your face, she can ask you to leave...or she can eject and ban you without asking, or explaining.  This is called the Golden Rule of SL:  "She Who Owns the Land, Makes the Rules."

My advice is, get your gun, and go to a combat sim.  But be prepared to be killed a whole lot.  Those guys are NASTY!
