I have one friend online that say name unavailable when I try to view their profile

So even when they are viewable online . They could be banned ?

That usually means that the person has been banned from Second Life by Linden Lab, so the account does not exist any more and you cannot choose the name because it has been used before.  If your friend wasn't banned --- or thinks he wasn't --- he (not YOU) can call the Linden Lab billing office to check.  If you have a non-technical issue related to billing concerns, you can call the Linden Lab billing team at the following toll-free numbers at any time 24/7:

Hi Prussia,

I've seen that happen to people I know, but it's been temporary and they've returned. And it wasn't a matter of them vanishing, as I've been chatting with people who's names were showing as "unavailable".

I can't explain it now, and I couldn't explain it a year ago...

No, if they are viewable online, then it's a temporary flaw in the servers and will probably clear up by itself.
