Question

I am an avid sl resident. I have been on for about four months now and recently got a home in sl. I clicked on my sl viewer to log in today and it seemed to start up saying detecting hardware, intializing teture cache, intiializing vfs as it always does but this time it stopped and didnt log and the process just stopped.  I tried several times and this happened each time. I was unable to bring up the log in screen at all.

I am very concerned! I would like to know how to fix this. I love sl and dont want to be unable to access it.

Sincerely,

Blue

Hi Blue,

Try restarting everything, computer, router, broadband modem, etc. If that doesn't bring things back, Nalates Urriah has a bunch of things to try that improve your computer's connection to SL.

http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/

It's possible that your ISP's DNS servers have temporarily forgotten where parts of SL are. Using Google's public DNS solved problems for me years ago (for more than SL).

If noodling with your connection doesn't get things working, it might be that some part of your viewer got messed up. That can often be fixed by doing a clean reinstall. Instructions for that can be found here...

Read the note about preserving chat logs if those are important to you. You will lose your viewer settings, but everything else (inventory, etc.) will be unaffected.

Before you do a re-install, you could try loading and running an alternate viewer, like Firestorm. Here's a list of approved variants...

It's often helpful to have two different viewers on your computer, so you can determine if your problems are viewer related.

Good luck!

ETA: I gotta type faster. Lindal's a fast draw.

;-).
